Elmergib University (historically) has been known by several names. Initially, it was called the University of the Intifada in 1991, then Nasser University in 1992, and finally Elmergib University. The decision to rename the university to Elmergib University was made under Decision No. (77) of 2001, establishing its headquarters in the city of Al Khums. Today, the university is considered one of the key universities in Libya. It has been a member of the Association of Arab Universities since June 17, 2004, the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World, and the Mediterranean Universities Union (Unimed) since June 26, 2018. The university awards academic degrees (bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in the humanities).
